On the Hill

The calendar says fall, but the thermometer says 86 degres - what do you believe? The calendar wins, every time. Renewed interest in sidewalks in Alplaus was expressed at the September ARA board meeting. Contact Chris Breslin if you would like to hear more about sidewalks.

35 calls in September, including the Hopkins house fire on Hill Street! Be sure to thank your neighbor volunteer fire person for their service in times of danger and emergency.…….AWH

  Alplaus Fire Station News

                                                                                        by Art Harris

Keep an eye out for a public service announcement put out by the NYS Emergency Management Office. It is for NY-Alert, a website [www.nyalert.gov] containing vital information in the event of an emergency.  The commercial was filmed in and around Alplaus, including the firehouse and Samuel's.

This is not the first time that film crews have been here, back in March scenes to appear in the upcoming movie Winter of Frozen Dreams [starring Keith Carradine & Thora Birch] were shot on Hill Street & Bruce Drive, as well as other locations locally.

In other news, the Annual Fire Department Fund Drive typically takes place in conjunction with National Fire Prevention Week [October 7-13]. Expect to see our members in your neighborhood handing out materials.  Feel free to stop them and chat a while, and please contribute whatever you can.

Don’t forget the Halloween party and kids costume parade on Saturday October 27th, beginning at 1pm.  It will be the perfect thing to keep the children occupied for any that have need to rest up after the Run-Around, also earlier that day.  What could be more fun than kids, costumes, candy & community?!

27th Alplaus Run-Around

                                      by Andy Gilpin

The 27th  Alplaus Run-Around will be on Saturday, October 27, 2007, in Alplaus with two events: a One-Mile Fun Run starting at 10 am, and a 5K Race at 10:30 am.

Entry fees are $5 for the Fun Run, $10 for the 5K Run. Both events start and finish at the Alplaus Fire House at the corner of Alplaus Avenue and Bruce Drive.

Day of race registration will be open from 9:15 am until 9:45 am.  We are looking to make this year’s event something special. It could be a perfect warm-up for the Stockade-a-thon.  Last year the rain and cold made the running very difficult, so we are looking to rebound this year with a great turn-out.

Prizes will be awarded to top finishers in the overall and age/gender categories of both races. The 5K will have prizes to the first male and female finishers, and special prizes to the first male and female from the Alplaus Fire District.

Pre-registration entry forms are available at the Alplaus Post Office, the Parkside YMCA, the Clifton Park YMCA and Goldstock’s Sporting Goods, 4 Freeman’s Bridge Road, Scotia.

This annual event is sponsored by the Alplaus Residents Association and the Alplaus Fire Department. For more information, call 366-2675 and ask for Andy Gilpin.

Ladies Auxiliary

                        by Vicki Watkins

The first event for our fall season was a covered dish supper last Monday night. It was wonderful to get together again after our summer break.  The food was delicious and we are busy making plans for future activities.

It’s not too late to sign up for the “Heartsaver CPR and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) Course” to be held on Thursday, October 11th from 6:30 pm to 9:30 pm at the Firehouse.  The course includes CPR, relief of foreign-body airway obstruction, rescue breathing and how to use an automated external defibrillator.  These skills can truly be lifesavers.  Class size is limited.  Please call Vicki at 399-0184 to sign up.

Don’t forget our Alplaus photo contest for a 2008 calendar.  The theme will be "HOUSES OF ALPLAUS".  Enter your best photographs of your home or your neighbors’ (with permission).  Feel free to be creative.  Seasonal shots would be great and they can be current or historical, color or black & white, and a minimum of 3x5.  Please add a short biography of the home including any interesting facts or history. The deadline is

October 15, 2007.  Enter as many photos as you would like for the $5.00 entry fee.  The photographs will be judged and the best 12 photographs will be selected for the calendar.  You can mail in your entries to Alplaus Ladies Auxiliary P. O. Box 43 Alplaus, New York 12008 or drop them off at the Alplaus Post office.

Halloween is just around the corner and we’ll be assisting the Fire Company with the annual Halloween Parade and Party for the kids on October 27th.  Please join us at the fire station for lots of fun, tricks and treats.

We are continuing to collect donations for the Schenectady Battered Women’s Shelter.  They are especially in need of school supplies this time of year.  A collection box is located in the Post Office.

Our next meeting will be on Monday, October 22nd at 7 pm at the Firehouse.  If you are interested in attending or learning more about us, please call Vicki at 399-0184.

ARA News

                        by Keith Abatto, Pres. ARA

Please make sure to read the Sewer Update from Barb Casey.  Construction will be starting soon!

************************

Alplaus Runaround.  Race Director Andy Gilpin is looking for volunteers and runners for the Alplaus Runaround, to be held on Saturday, October 27th (10 am for the one-mile race and 10:30 am for the 5K).  Look for entry forms at the post office or in this month’s Hometown News.  Feel free to make copies, give them to family and friends, or bring them into the office or school. Help us get the word out about what a fun time the race is.

For more information about the race, check out alplaus.org or e-mail race organizer Andy Gilpin at gilp18@hotmail.com

Alplaus Fire Company & EMTs.  I had the unfortunate need to call 911 on Sunday night, 9/23. We had a family medical emergency with a happy ending. This was the second time this happened at my house in the last seven years. I want to thank the Fire Company and the EMTs in Alplaus. The fast response, quantity of volunteers, and skilled expertise was amazing. Even more amazing was the memory of the Chief, Drew Coppola. He remembered exactly what happened seven years ago, the last time the Department responded to our house for the same reason.

We are truly blessed to live in this great community filled with such caring and competent neighbors willing to give their time, anytime, with no warning. Please remember to thank these volunteers and support them in their next fund drive. They need the proper tools to continue doing the great job we have all come to rely on.

Sewer Update

            by Barb Casey

For our sewer update this month, I'm passing along a message I had from Rick LeClair, the Town of Glenville Commissioner of Public Works. Rick informed me a few days later that easements for all but a very few properties have been signed. Mark Kestner told me that he believes construction should begin later in October because we're still working specific details out with Clifton Park that could save us hundreds of dollars each year, as you see below.

Thank you very much to residents who signed their easements, thus keeping costs down for all of us. We all appreciate it! Feel free to call or e-mail with any questions. Here is Rick's message, edited a little bit:

I have had a set back with the plan for Stan Kivort, because my plan was not accepted by the Town of Glenville.  We are currently waiting for a negotiated contract between the Town of Glenville and Town of Clifton Park. The ball is out of my court now, but I am looking forward to sitting down with Clifton Park to sign contracts.

Here is the outcome if everything goes as planned: $904.00 is presently the annual cost.  Subtracting $50 for O&M and $180 for usage leaves a debt payment of $674 per year.

  $674 - Alplaus by themselves

  $622 - School & Alplaus

  $587 - Add 17+ units along way

$473 - Add Olde Nott Farm

  $439 - Add 30+ units along way

$380 - Add Hamlet of Rexford

A total of 474 units in a Clifton Park and Glenville joint effort would lower the cost to Alplaus residents from $904 to $610 [$380+$50+$180], which is lower than the state comptroller minimum. I also found that when two towns [better yet two counties] join in the sharing of municipal infrastructure they qualify for a grant from the Governor's office for intermunicipality cooperation, which could result in more savings for all involved.

I have been extremely busy trying to get easements signed. Eric Dickson will be taken over the easements, so if you know of anyone that hasn't signed, please talk to them.

The town must move now or will be subject to delay fines since the contractor can not start until easements are signed. I am out of time. Please call me at the office 382-1406 or my cell 857-9937.

   Still working for Alplaus,

   Rick

Please call me or e-mail me if you have any questions.  Barb Casey

Update from the Hopkins of

Hill Street

                                    by Matt Hopkins

Things for the Hopkins have been going great. We have settled down into our “new” house and neighborhood. A family moved in right behind us last week that has children much the same ages as ours and each day we meet more folks that affirm that these temporary digs will be more than just a holding pen. Between our lack of furniture and the size of the place (if you haven't heard, its scale is such that there is a bath and a half on the 3rd floor!) we have plenty of room to move around.

Fortunately it is the kind of place that looks good without furniture, the wood work and floors are off the scale. Our insurance company is handling things really well and we are very confident that things are going as well as they could be.

Our phone and internet are back up so we should be much easier to get hold of at our old phone number and e-mail address. Our house on Hill Street is now finished being gutted and plans for the rebuild are underway. We have another week or so of sifting through debris and books that were damaged, but aside from that we are definitely in a “post fire” reality.

We can't thank you all enough for the help and encouragement that we have gotten from our family in Alplaus. Your meals, cards, and generosity has been a constant (and I mean that) encouragement.

Thanks for being there and we will keep you posted on our rebuilding.      Matt and Tammy Hopkins et al.
