On the Hill
What a wacky weather year. Some of our best summer
weather comes in the early fall! On top of that it looks like the autumn leaves
will come early too.
It was
great to see the large number of "Alplaus School Kids" who returned
for their reunion this past week. Alplaus really does get into your bones and
call you back from far away places it seems.
We note
with Alplaus pride in the September 16th Spotlight that Joe Bena will be one of
four New York coaches to receive this year's "Lifetime Service to
Wrestling" award from the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. Joe leads all
active coaches in New York State with 431 wins to date. He currently coaches
the Duanesburgh High School team in his 39th year of coaching.…AWH

An
Interesting Call
by Bob Culver
On September 30th, the Alplaus Fire Department
responded to a medical call (as they do frequently) to a home on Maple Avenue. The
uniqueness of this event was that the patient was located on the second floor
and it was not possible to negotiate the narrow stairway to bring the adult
patient down with the usual stretchers used.
The
ultimate solution was to enlist the services of the aerial ladder from the East
Glenville Fire Department to remove the patient from a second floor porch.
The Stratton Air Guard Fire Department,
Mohawk Ambulance, and the Glenville Police also assisted on this call.
Alplaus Fire
Department 75th Anniversary Committee
by Mike Sheppeck
The
Alplaus Fire Department 75th Anniversary Committee will hold a
meeting Thursday, October 14th at 7:00pm at the Firehouse. This
initial meeting is a blue sky session to discuss any and all ideas of how best
to mark this important milestone in our history.
We expect representatives from the Alplaus
Residents Association, the Ladies Auxiliary, the Alplaus Historical Society,
and the Methodist Church may attend (who knows, maybe embodied in the same
person!). This meeting is open to all, especially those that may have had a
hand in the celebration for the 50th. Hope to see you there.

Alplaus
Runaround
Hope
you’re planning to join us for this year’s Alplaus Runaround, scheduled for
Saturday, October 30th. The one-mile road race will begin at 10am, with the 5K
starting off at 10:30am.
Bring the whole family out for a great race
and let your friends and neighbors know as well. If you’re not running, come
out and cheer the runners on! They
could always use a word of encouragement.
Look for a race application right
here in the Home Town News.
New
to the community?
Looking for a low-stress, easy way to get
involved and help out? Considering
volunteering for the Alplaus Runaround!
We need lots of help with registration, refreshments, traffic control,
and prizes.
The commitment is minimal, but the fun of
race day is significant. If you’d like to volunteer, please call race director
Charlie Casey (that’s right, it’s a family affair) at 399-5714.
Sewer
Update
The ARA
sewer committee is in the process of scheduling a meeting with town officials
and the consulting engineer to get a report on the project’s progress. If you
have issues or questions you’d like us to raise at that meeting, please either
call or e-mail me or one of the other committee members: Art Harris, Gray
Watkins, Gary Withey, and Rick Fleming.
I’ll share the update in next month’s
Hometown News.

History Lesson.
In 1923, who was?
1.
President of the largest steel company?
2.
President of the largest gas company?
3.
President of the New York Stock Exchange?
4. The Great Bear of Wall Street?
These men
were considered some of the worlds most successful of their day. Now, 81 years
later, the history book asks us, if we know what ultimately became of them.
The
answers:
1.
The president of the largest steel company, Charles Schwab, died a pauper.
2.
The president of the largest gas company, Edward Dopson, went insane.
3.
The president of the NYSE, Richard Whitney, was released from prison to die at
home.
4. The Great Bear of Wall Street, Cosabee Livermore,
committed suicide.
However,
in that same year, 1923, the PGA Champion and the winner of the most important
golf tournament, the US Open, was Gene Sarazen.
What
became of him?
He played
golf until he was 92, died in 1999 at the age of 95. He was financially secure
at the time of his death.
The moral:
Forget
work. Play golf.

Alplaus Explorer Post 885
by Kathleen Sheppeck

September is a busy month with the usual
back-to-school flurry of activity. Our Explorers have been even busier than
most. As always, they have been actively training with the Alplaus
firefighters. Last month they participated in a drill at the Air National
Guard’s training facility which simulated a structure fire response.
Everyone
learned a lot and got to use many of the skills they have been developing over
the last year. The kids also assisted the Fire Department with their emergency
stand-by at the Glendale Home’s Car Show and a rowing competition on the Mohawk
River. Both activities were scheduled for the same day, which called for creative
deployment of personnel.

Ladies Auxiliary
by Vicki Watkins
The Ladies Auxiliary kicked off our fall
season with a covered dish supper last Monday night. The evening was full of great food, good cheer and new faces.
Welcome to our two newest members Jill Batson and Michelle Mazur.
The Auxiliary is sponsoring two events this
fall that are open to the entire community. We hope that you will enjoy these
offerings:
“The Alplauskill/Indiankill Ecosystem”
on Wed. Oct 20th at 7:30 pm at the Firehouse. This will be a slide
show and presentation by Mark Storti, President of the Schenectady County
Conservation Council and Senior GIS Specialist, Sch’dy County Economic
Development.
“Heartsaver CPR and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) Course”
on Thursday, Nov. 4th or 11th from 6:00
pm to 10:00 pm. The course includes CPR, relief of foreign-body airway
obstruction, rescue breathing and how to use an automated external defibrillator. These skills can truly be lifesavers. Class
size is limited. Please call Vicki at
399-0184 to sign up.
On another note, in an effort to help those
less fortunate than we are, the Auxiliary will be collecting toiletry items,
used cell phones or monetary donations for the Schenectady Battered Women’s
Shelter. A collection box is located in the Post Office.
Cherie
Vedder has invited us to hold our next meeting at Samuel’s so that we can
learn more about plans for its use and see the results of all the hard work
Cherie, Matt Hopkins and the community and student volunteers have been doing.
The meeting will be on Monday, October 25th at 7 pm. If you are
interested in attending or learning more about us, please call Vicki at
399-0184.

The Alplaus Historical Society met on September 30th at the
Firehouse, with twenty-one interested residents and former residents in
attendance. We were honored to have in our midst four former residents who had
been in town for the "Alplaus Reunion" held earlier in the day. They
were Linda Gray Calderon, Pauline Kardash Battaglia, Bob Stote and Bob Nerad.
These
folks gave us some very enjoyable historical facts and anecdotes about Alplaus
in the 1950's such as the first television (where many would gather to watch
the wonder) and tales about the stores (two in those days). We certainly
appreciated their presence and contributions to our Alplaus history project.
The
project to gather facts about all village homes is getting underway under the
leadership of Judy Harris, Emma Spiedel and Dede Bell. Some sheets have been
returned already, some with photographs attached. The goal is to build a database of homes in the community for
Society use.
The forms
are being distributed on a one-on-one basis to each household in an effort to
bring a personal touch to the search for historical information. They may also
be obtained from Kathy Boyle at the Post Office.
Other
Business included the need for the Society to organize more formally in view of
stated purpose, structure and finances.
These and
other items, including a guest speaker (to be announced later) will be the
topic of our next meeting scheduled for Thursday, November 18, 2004 at 7:00 pm at
the Firehouse.
RETIRED
by Tom Kiernan
I remember saying
that once I had retired
I’d travel, play
golf, write stories much inspired,
Do carpentry work,
perhaps a little paint.
Now it’s been several
months. Have I done them????? I ain’t.
Initially I took a
trip, a pleasant southern ride
with…I’ll let you
guess. Of course with the bride.
I took walks in
forests, on beaches white and wide.
And the sun cast two
shadows…me and the bride.
I’ve daily been to
Walmarts and spent hours inside
led by my guide, the
expert, the bride.
I now know the greeter. He smiles with
pride
as he says hello to me and the bride.
Today I am a merchant. Our store is
outside.
It’s a garage sale… the idea of “guess
who”? Of course… the bride.
We’ve sold a few trinkets and the hours I
bide
as I sit in the yard with the ever present
bride.
Later on I’ll mow the lawn…not a mower I
can ride.
We both need the exercise…the opinion of
the bride.
So there we are together, mowing side by
side.
The red mower is for me. The green one for
the bride.
Tomorrow I’ll have breakfast, bacon and
eggs fried.
But I won’t eat alone. There’s my ever
loving bride.
Then it's crossword puzzles, “another word
for tied.”
She smiles and says “Marriage…You’re my
hubby. I’m your bride””
