Alplaus
Fire Company News Our new tool was put to use already!
The Thermal Imaging Camera, reported as a new acquisition last
month, received its "baptism of fire" early on the morning of
October 28th.
Shortly after 5 am, a call was received for "flames coming
from the chimney" at 69 Maple Avenue.
This immediately brought to mind, "a chimney fire", but
perhaps more emotionally, the address was that of our Company President,
and Fire Chief's father. Andy Coppola!
A fine example of modern technology aiding an ancient profession! |

On
the Hill
Lots and lots of news in this issue folks!
A happy first birthday for Baby James, a house fire checked in its tracks by
our ready fire-fighters, the latest on our sewer expansion plans, another bit
of Alplaus lore, and much more. This is a busy fall for Alplaus.
Our first traces of snow have come before the leaves are all off the
trees - as we have come to expect. And there are some who still believe in
global warming. Not the brave runners who ran the 26th Alplaus Run-Around. It
doesn't surprise them to see in the paper that we are 9.25 inches over normal
rainfall for the year as of November 3rd.

Post Office News Holiday stamps have arrived and are now
available for purchase. Last year we sold out a few days before
Christmas so come in early. There are two different holiday designs
books to choose from. We also have a supply of priority mail boxes and
envelopes along with an assortment of various size padded envelopes.
Many events take place in the community this time of the year and
signs are happily posted on our bulletin board or windows for all to
see. So don't miss out on the fun. There is something always happening
in Alplaus. Happy Thanksgiving to all, Kathy Boyle |

Come to the

stock your pantries with delicious holiday treats.
If you don’t have the time to bake during this hectic time of
year, let us do it for you! |

Goings
On Around Town by
Barb Casey |
|
Things are heating up in our quiet little hamlet. Sewer Update: Bids for the sewer project have come in at nearly 20% over
the petitioned amount, news I received on October 13th. The
town board has asked us to re-petition residents, but I don’t yet know
how much we’ll be asked to pay or when we’ll have petitions from the
town. Many residents have said they want to move
forward, regardless of cost. Others have said that they want to explore
other options for sewers or re-do the entire design. Some are pointing
fingers of blame; others are just waiting to hear what transpires. I
do understand why some would experience a lack of faith in any plan
being put forward. I too am deeply disappointed by the lack of results
for all of you who’ve waited so patiently and been so supportive.
However, when officials think it’s only one person or a small handful
of people who care passionately about this, there’s little reason for
a change in the process. I believe it’s time for all of you to
exercise your democratic rights and contact those responsible for making
these decisions. Whether
you wish to move forward as expeditiously as possible or you think
it’s time to conclude the process and repair the septic systems that
need repair, make your voice heard. Make a phone call, write a letter,
send an e-mail, and write a letter to the editor. Fight for a solution,
people of Alplaus! Frank Quinn, Supervisor

The telephone number is: 518-688-1200. I
wish all of us the best of luck in what is to come.
Alplaus Run-Around: Cold,
rainy, AND windy. Runners
love a little adversity, so those hardy souls who showed up for this
year’s Runaround on October 28th had a wonderful time.
I know—I was one of them. Thanks so much to race director Andy
Gilpin and all the volunteers who turned out in unpleasant
conditions to help out. A
special thanks to former residents but still Alplausians at heart Paul
Holtermann and his wife Joan. Paul told me that he’s helped at every
single Runaround—all 26 of them. Race results appear elsewhere in this
edition.
Holiday
Tree Lighting: Please
put December 9th on your calendar, the date of the Alplaus
Residents Association annual tree lighting, to be held once again at the
firehouse. It’s a nice get-together with kids and families, so we hope
you’ll join us. Santa arrives by fire truck to start the festivities,
and Andy and Karen Gilpin of First Street will regale us with song.

Alplaus Bird Line

Thompson

One way to help with the challenge is to put a variety of food in
your feeders, and have various types if feeders available. Different
birds have definite preferences. You can’t go wrong if you put out
sunflower seed, especially black oil sunflower seed. Many kinds of birds
enjoy this – cardinals, tufted titmice, chickadees and blue jays.
Goldfinches and other finches like thistle seed and if you want lots of
woodpeckers put out a block of suet. Seed mixtures containing dried
fruit will attract many birds as well, and the Carolina Wrens will love
you if you put freeze-dried mealworms in a sheltered spot for them.
Fill your feeders, then call the Alplaus Bird Line at 399-0490 (9
am to 9 pm) and let me know what shows up. |

Alplaus
or Ale Place. Another
version of the interpretation of the name of our little village of
Alplaus has come to the attention of the history society.
Hanging on the wall of a 3rd floor bedroom at the
Schenectady Historical Society on Washington Avenue in Schenectady is a
map of New York State published in 1779. The map was made by Claude
Joseph Sauthier, a Swiss engineer & cartographer, that he compiled
from actual surveys deposited in the patent office in New York.
The Albany & Schenectady region was copied by the SHS &
distributed as 11” X 12” prints of which a copy has been obtained
for the AHS. Inspection of this map reveals our town is named “Ale
Place” & the creek as “Aleplace Kill” in 1779. There appears
to be 2 inhabitants on either side of the creek in the area of the
village. It is Interesting to note that the Rexford area hadn’t been
populated at that time.
According to the indenture made December 8, 1783 that granted the
land on the east (village) side of the creek from Abraham Van Eps to
Robert Bett (Bath), the creek was named AelPlaatkill.
From a historical aspect, it seems noteworthy of the name Ale
Place.
The map also can be viewed on the information highway at:

Barb Casey, (Alplaus), F, 44, 29:53 18.
Bill Shrader, M, 63, 30:42 There
were 10 less runners this year than last year in the 5K Run. This year’s race went really well despite
the weather not cooperating. With
the steady rain and somewhat cool conditions, we had a lack luster
turn-out. However, the
weather didn’t dampen the spirits or dedication of the runners or
the volunteers. There
were still plenty of smiles and good cheer that made the race very
bearable. I know I said
it last year, but I say it again; I am so very impressed with the
community of Alplaus and how they turn out to help with this race each
year, and the runners that commit to running every year.
Here are the results:
The winner of the One-mile was Christopher Murphy, eleven years
old, and with an amazing time of 5:57.
He was chased very closely by his brother, Ryan Murphy who
turned in a time of 6:10. The
winner of the 5K, Alex Coppola, Alplaus Fire District Resident, posted
a very fast time of 18:52. He was followed very closely by fellow
teammate and Alplaus Fire District Resident, Omar Hay at 19:06 and
Christopher Murphy at 19:18. The first female runner was Robin Salvin,
Alplaus Fire District Resident, at 25:16. I would also like to recognize Gray Watkins as the only
runner in this year’s race who has run every single Alplaus
Run-Around since its inception. What
dedication!
Finally, I would like to give special thanks for the generous
contributions of Lake Side
Farms (donuts and cider), Samuel’s
(great coffee), Goldstock’s
(gift certificate), Eastern
Mountain Sports (a gift certificate and water bottles), Price
Chopper for the donation of food, Electric
City Rock Gym for gift certificates, and the Casey family and their wonderful donation of honey. Sincerely, Andy Gilpin …………………………………………………………………………………………………….. |
