- 2006 Charter and 75 year
Member Alplaus
Fire Department On
February 2, 2006 at 5:45 am Alplaus lost one of its most outstanding
citizens. Although he resided in Florida in recent years he spent most
of his life on Second Street in the village.
He was the sole surviving charter member and a Past President of
the Alplaus Volunteer Fire Company. He also held many line officer
positions.
Gil was the unofficial historian and watchdog for the village,
keeping track of people, places and things. A familiar sight around the
village he would often be found at the firehouse, repairing, painting,
cleaning, washing the trucks, or doing anything and everything to make
the fire equipment and fire house more safe and efficient.
He was a friend, a teacher, an excellent role model for the
younger generation, and a strong presence for an honest work ethic. But
most of all he was a gentlemen to one and all.
His twinkling eyes, cheery hello and friendly smile will be
remembered and missed by all who knew him.
Our heartfelt sympathies go out to his wife Jean, son Roy and
daughter Ann. There will be a memorial service at the Alplaus Fire House in the summer. He donated his body to the University of Florida Medical School. March 2006 Hometown News |
