The Alplaus
community has lost one of our strong supporters both physically and
politically! Paul Holtermann passed away at Kingsway Arms on April 4.
After twenty years of service he retired from the U.S. Air Force, and was
then employed by the Internal Revenue Service in Albany. The Holtermann
family lived on Mohawk Avenue in the former Congdon home.
Paul joined the Alplaus Fire Company in 1973.
One of his first efforts was to help with the formation of the
Drill Team, using his military experience.
He served as a Fire Commissioner where he showed his "can
do" ability, one instance involved the installation of the electric
openers on the bay doors.
After the "experts" said it could not be done due to the
low ceiling, he located a vendor who said it could, and in a short time
there were electrically operated doors!
A subject of much discussion was the insulating of the ceiling on
the second floor of the firehouse.
Paul tired of the discussion, so one Sunday, with his son Peter;
they installed the necessary rolls of insulation.
Paul will be remembered for many things, always ready to help with
projects, especially with the financial aspect of them.
He was also our local Democratic Committeeman and regular candidate
for various offices.
Unfortunately, Glenville was not ready for the Democratic
candidates at that time.
He was always able to handle this adversity with his sense of
humor.
His wife Joan, to whom he was married for fifty-two years and his
children Kim Stahl, of Houston, Texas, Peter of Clifton Park and Keith of
Bethlehem, Pennsylvania and their families, which include six
grandchildren, survive Paul. He was buried in the Gerald Solomon National Cemetery in Schuylerville, NY. May
