Ju= dy and I had a wonderful Christmas in Chicago with family. When your grandchild is 800 hundred miles away at Christmas you get in the big bird and fly. Even with lots of friends around, it wouldn't = have felt like much of a Christmas to be just by ourselves.

This month we have the first of Shawna Thompson's Alplaus Bird Line columns (see Page 4).  Alplaus= is a wonderful place to bird watch with the creek and so many trees and undevelo= ped space. You may be surprised at what she reports seeing with her experienced eyes and ambitious walks and paddles.

&nb= sp; As if we needed any more evidence of the big hearts to be found in Alplausians, this month's Samuel's Report tells of the success of the appeal for help for the family of a 17 year old stricken with cancer. Their need is ongoing. Please help if you can.

Don't forget the Chili Extravaganza and Competition on Friday night,= January 20, 2006. Come and enjoy a variety of tasty chilies. Or, better yet, bring your best chili and compare it with the rest.

   Happy New Year to all…..AWH

Happy New Year to everyone.

Just a reminder, the USPS has set Sunday, January 8, 2006 as the effective date for the new increase in postal rates and fees. This will also include international rates. The new rates are:

First class stamp rate:        $0.39

2nd ounce         =             &nb= sp;    $0.24

Postcard rate         =             &nb= sp;$0.24        =

Book of stamps (20)         =   $7.80

  $39.00<= o:p>

Box rents will also increase slightly. Anyone due in January can squeak by at t= he old rate if paid before January 8th.

I should have the new rate-fold cards to pass out within the next few days. I= do have a large supply of 2 cent makeup stamps and the new 39 cent stamps in s= tock now.

If you're interested in more specific information feel free to give me a call = at the post office @ 399-8048 or you can access the USPS web-site @ www.usps.com

Alplaus Explorer Post 885

by Kathleen Sheppeck

Re= flecting on the past year with Post 885 brings to mind how much our Explorers have learned and how they continue to develop into young ladies and men about wh= om our community can be proud. Already, one of our Explorers made the transiti= on from Explorer to firefighter when he joined the Rexford Fire Department.

Within the next month, Alplaus will likely see the same benefit as our first eight= een year old applies to the Fire Company for active membership.

The Post has a lot of great ideas to make 2006 another fun and productive year.  We are seeking new memb= ers 14 years and up. Think about joining an exciting and rewarding activity and serving the community that so depends on its volunteers.

ARA News

Best wishes to everyone for a Happy New Year! My family and I rang in the New Year in a rustic cabin in Vermont, away from phones, computers, televisions, and the hustle and bustle that has marked December. We hiked in two-and-a-half miles through a snow-covered forest and once we arrived, we could see Mt. Equinox from our window and watche= d more snow fall throughout New Year's Eve. It was beautiful!

Com= ptroller Approved Sewer Extension.  At the year's end, Art Harris and I learned during a meeting at t= own hall that the state comptroller has approved the Alplaus sewer extension project. The town plans for a tentative timeframe for construction beginning this June that will conclude next December. An upgrade of the existing syst= em connecting it to the Maple= Avenue line and decommissioning the old sewer treatment plant is planned within the same timeframe.

Lots of steps must happen between now and the start of construction, including mapping, permits, soils tests, and sending the project out to bid. As you recall, the project needs to stay within the maximum cost outlined to proce= ed. Although the cost numbers were generated three years ago, consulting engine= er Mark Kestner believes he will still be able to stay within those projection= s.
