The
Alplaus Post Office, zip 12008, was established on October 30, 1922
with Mrs. Caroline Estabrook as its first Postmaster. It was located
in the building that contained Marions's Closet.
|
- It was later moved next door, the present Alplaus Super Market, and
in 1943 to it's present location.
|
- Ida Dillman became Postmaster that September
and held that post until July 1, 1972.
|
- July 1, 1972. The position was is taken over
by Marion Witkowski, loaned to the office by the Burnt Hills Post
Office, and she officiated until November 1973.
|
- Shortly before that time, the Postal Service
decided to close the Alplaus Office. A committee was formed, to save
our Alplaus Post Office and to try to retain our own local postal
identity. After the legal manipulations were complete, the village was
given a choice of losing their post office or becoming a contract
station under the Rexford Post Office. Needless to say, the later was
chosen, and on November 1, 1973 Jeanne Story became the contractor,
the position she holds at the present time.
|
- Jeanne Story retired from the Alplaus Post
Office position in 1989. A bid was accepted by the Postal Service from
Cherie Vedder and she assumed the position
|
- In 1990 another long time resident Lorie
Vedder became postmaster. The post office moved a few times during
Lorie's tenure. Some people may remember that the post office was once
combined with a coffee shop named "Downtown Stamp and Bean"
that Lorie and her husband Paul ran. Lorie retired from the position
in November 2001.
|
- The Alplaus Post Office is presently located
at 311 Alplaus Avenue. The present Postmaster is Kathy Boyle. There
are 96 postal lock boxes in use and three part-time helpers.
|
- The beautiful mural of Alplaus Avenue was
painted by Jean Conley and Betty Hopson in 2002.
|
- The facelift to the interior and exterior of
the building was completed by many volunteers of the community.
